Chicken and the egg

Two eggs, in fact!

Each day, on the way out to recess, we've checked the nesting box in the coop for eggs.

Mostly, this is what we found . . .
not really what we were hoping for.
(Although, it is interesting to note that in birds, eggs, urine, and feces all exit from a single opening called a cloaca.  In our Great Questions Book, a curious student once wondered if bird poop could form a fossil.  Dr. Bakker says that since urine and feces are mixed and excreted at the same time, he doesn't think it's likely.)

Finally, our curiosity and persistence were rewarded.  This week, when we peeked in the little window to the nesting box, we saw eggs!  Our lovely hen has begun to lay.
