In the garden a-weedin'

"There's so much life that makes its home in the garden!" one of our first graders told me, gleeful and grinning, breathless with the excitement of discovery.  Indeed there is.  The garden is filled with hidden learning treasures, waiting to be noticed.

Today we tasted fennel seeds, deadheaded basil, and pulled weeds to make room for new growth.  While we worked, the children spied aphids, a ladybug (harvesting aphids, no doubt), a grub, tiny snails, a few fungi, a dead toad (very distracting) and several bees (lured by our basil flowers).
